Compatibility

The idea that shared interests make a couple compatible is very common:

What Mr. Godla shared with Ms. Vignon, which he hadn’t with his first three wives, was “a passion for the field of 18th-century craftsmanship in French decorative arts,” Ms. Vignon said. Source

We talked the other night about why we get on so well, and came up with this list:

  • both lived a communal lifestyle
  • both lived abroad
  • have politics in common
  • same approach to money and housekeeping

With these, you might say what a lucky match we are, but then I listed the ways we could be considered mismatched:

  • different cultures – Jewish and Protestant
  • different origins – England and America
  • you have children, I don’t
  • you had two long-term relationships; I only had shorter ones
  • you grew up in an open, loving family; I was raised with English reserve
  • you follow the Urantia papers; I am attracted to Zen Buddhism
  • we work in very different fields

So I don’t think it has much to do with these factors, but instead is more to do with how we are with each other.
